NTU Fest 2015 as it happened

Here’s the lowdown on NTU’s biggest student-led event this year at The Promontory @ Marina Bay to mark the start of the new academic year and Singapore’s Golden Jubilee

12.31pm @ToggleSG We’re starting our Saturday with @dalshabet! The girls are all hyped up for their gig tonight #NTUFest.

The buzz at The Hive earlier in the day.

3pm NTU student group Soul Funky is all set to dance their hearts out.

4.05pm MediaCorp stars Jayley Woo, Shaun Chen and Seraph Sun drop by for a meet-and-greet session with their fans. Drama serial addict Lyon is at the head of the queue!

4.14pm Don’t hold anything back! The mass warmup session for the 5km 5ynergy Run gets everyone psyched up. What’s more, it’s all for a good cause. Proceeds from the run will go towards a programme that uses sports to help youth-at-risk.

4.25pm NTU President Prof Bertil Andersson is ready to flag off the first group of runners. The blare sounds and he waves the flag enthusiastically. “Go, go, go, run!” he encourages the runners and pumps his fist energetically.

5.01pm Former national football striker Aleksandar Duric, who still holds the record for the most number of goals in the S.League, is spotted with his sons.

5.05pm The crowd builds at the science and tech exhibits. New to Singapore and NTU, third-year engineering exchange student Tim Thompson, 20, from Canada, gets his fill of 3D. “This is so cool. I’ve seen so many different types of 3D printing here that I didn’t know about before.”

5.20pm Looking like he could use a drink, final-year student Andrew Yin, who has been standing for hours, is seen explaining his community project to yet another curious passer-by. “We provide affordable and hygienic sanitary pads to rural girls and women in India.”

5.30pm Alaric Tay as Xin Hua Hua from The Noose arrives at NTU Fest. Fest-goers around us start to giggle and snap photos.

6.15pm Despite being labelled a “tower” (for being so tall) and a “watermelon” (for looking like a watermelon?) by this mischievous crowd of Kids’ Run participants, emcee Ingrid Ho leads them in one last cheer before they set off.

6.36pm Education Minister Mr Heng Swee Keat receives a warm welcome and is escorted to the exhibition area. On his way there, he spots the BMW i8, used for research at NTU, and jokes: “Wow, so can we win this car today?”

6.46pm Minister Heng, together with Prof Andersson, NTU Provost Prof Freddy Boey, NTU Students’ Union President Wu GuoYi, and Chairperson of the NTU Fest organising committee Tan Hui Jun, unveil the record-breaking NTU Fest logo made up of 10,000 photos.

7.10pm Minister Heng, Prof Andersson and Prof Boey are joined on stage by MediaCorp artiste Rebecca Lim, and all of them sing a heartwarming rendition of Home. Minister Heng whips out his phone for a timely selfie/wefie.

7.15pm The top eight contestants of The Final One are introduced. Emcees Joakim Gomez and Gerald Koh, popular 98.7FM radio deejays, yell for Shanice Hedger and announces to the crowd that the “home girl” is from NTU’s Wee Kim Wee School of Communication & Information.

7.44pm Actor and singer Elvin Ng shows up on stage with his rendition of When you say nothing at all. His fans wave their banners and scream his name.

7.54pm The five “Dukes of MediaCorp” – Zhang Zhen Huan, Jeffrey Xu, Shane Pow, Romeo Tan and Ian Fang – almost bring the house down when they launch into a xinyao medley. Overheard in the crowd: “Romeo Tan is soooo good-looking!”

8.11pm Made-in-NTU band District 12 hits the stage with sky-high energy levels. “Four years ago, there was nothing like this. I’m from NTU too so you’re one of us. It’s time to party!” yells lead vocalist Christopher Lee.

8.14pm @iamnatho Thanks for having us! Have a blast #NTU! (Nat Ho returns the affection he and part of the cast of Tanglin received earlier.)

8.42pm The wait is finally over. Dal Shabet bounces onto stage with B.B.B (Big Baby Baby) to loud cheering. The fans seem to know every part of their songs, and chant along to the catchy verses.

9.12pm Lyon joins the k-pop stars during their last song, Mr Bang Bang. The show-stopping sextet break their carefully choreographed routine to hug and dance alongside the luckiest mascot of the night.

9.30pm And it’s a wrap! NTU Fest 2015 is officially over.
