When her schoolmates were cramming for their final exams in April, Yi Yao was already working at media agency Dentsu. She had also turned down two other job offers from a major advertising media company and a local magazine group, believing she’d have a larger avenue for growth at Dentsu.

Poised and articulate, she is clearly a young woman comfortable in her own skin. But she reveals that she only came into her own in NTU.

“I discovered my confidence through dancing. I joined the MJ Hip Hop Dance Club in my first year and realised that I could truly express myself fully while dancing.”

At the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication & Information, she found herself being stretched creatively as well.

“I was surrounded by people who inspired me every day, not least my professors. Dr Mark Cenite made media law classes fun by injecting pop culture references into lessons, and Assoc Prof Arul Chib pushed us to try crazy ideas during communication campaign classes.”

Her time in NTU culminated with her final-year project, Floss Forward, a health communication campaign to encourage people to floss. For the project, the team composed an original song and filmed a music video that has garnered 35,000 views on YouTube.
