Soft spots for animals

Just like us, animals wouldn’t take too well to highways being built in front of their homes. And animals in the tropics are particularly sensitive to disturbances in their habitat, say environmental experts from NTU, who found that tropical wildlife are dependent on large, unbroken areas of forest landscape. Building green corridors, or creating many smaller areas of forests, should not be done at the expense of disrupting large areas of continuous forest. This study has implications for the design of wildlife reserves, wherein there’s a longstanding debate about whether it’s better to have many small ones, or fewer large ones.
