Why do we classify dogs as pets and cows as food? Seeking to find answers to this is an NTU researcher, who looked at how Singaporeans rated 16 animals – including rabbits, sharks and pigs – in terms of warmth and competence. The results suggest that people might make judgements on animals to justify how they treat those they dislike or consume as food. Whether or not we do this ourselves might provide some food for thought.
