Tackling tides

As sea levels rise, we need creative solutions to safeguard our land. NTU’s bright young minds, showcased by two winning entries in a Public Utilities Board competition that sought ideas to protect Singapore’s southeastern coastline, offer hope. Both done by a team of undergrads from the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering, one proposal suggested a curvilinear living seawall that promotes coral colonisation to enhance its function as a natural barrier, while the other presented three islands, with a reservoir and innovative protective structuresw such as breakwaters and dykes, that string from Marina East to Changi City.
